A Special Look Into The Fashion In The 70's
The era of the 70's was one of my favourites. Yes, even the fashions. When you think of the 1970's, you may think of flamboyant disco wear and polyester pantsuits. However, that isn't all there was when it came to fashion in the 70's. There were a variety of fashion trends that defined the decade and made the 70's so memorable.
The Caftan
The end of the sixties left us with many different trends, some that stuck around, some that didn't. One such trend was the caftan, also referred to as the kaftan or mumu. This served as a type of housewife uniform, and kept ladies comfortable as they went about their day. Caftans were often featured in bright colors and floral prints.
Skirts of Many Lengths
In the 70's, skirts were short, long and in between. Truly, the length of a skirt depended on the mood of the woman wearing it. There was no set standard, as miniskirts were considered as fashionable as knee lengh or ankle length skirts and dresses were.
Platform Shoes
Platform shoes were a big part of fashion in the 70's. Big, wide, clunky wedge shaped heels in all styles and colors were the footwear of the decade for both men and women, especially those that frequented disco clubs and embraced that lifestyle. One of the most novel trends of the time were clear platform shoes, sometimes with items embedded in the heel for extra interest.
Pantsuits
Pantsuits were worn frequently with platform shoes and created with fabrics like polyester and cotton/polyester blends. It was common for the pants to feature a flare or bell bottom leg. Sometimes, the sleeves on the shirt were also bell shaped or flared, sometimes not. Colors ranged from classic white to bright colors like turquoise, yellow, red and orange.
Halter Tops
In the 70's, skin was in. And nowhere was that more evident than the halter top trend. A halter top was a sleeveless, strapless top that was held on the body by being tied around the neck, hence the name.
Tube Tops
Tube tops were similar to halter tops, except there was literally nothing holding them on. They were basically, as their name suggests, tube shaped. Elastic kept them in place, also they were often made from stretchy fabrics like jersey and terrycloth.
